Tonnelle Ave Bridge Replacement & Utility Relocation

  • Client: Gateway Development Commission
  • Location: North Bergen, NJ

Project Overview

Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen, NJ, is a toll-free highway maintained by NJDOT, carrying U.S. Routes 1 and 9 through Hudson County. This high-profile project involves utility relocations and constructing a new precast concrete, two-span bridge to carry Tonnelle Avenue over Amtrak’s future dual-track Right-of-Way for the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP). As the first project in the program, its timely completion is critical to advancing tunneling contracts and improving northeast corridor capacity.

Success depends on maintaining safety, controlling costs, adhering to schedules, coordinating contractors, and managing environmental risks. The contract requires full coordination with future program phases and compliance with FTA/FRA project management rules. Construction will follow a phased approach, temporarily shifting four roadway lanes in three stages to allow sequential bridge construction while maintaining traffic flow. Lane closures will be minimized during off-peak hours, and utility relocations will be coordinated to avoid conflicts and service disruptions.
