Rehabilitation of Gowanus Expressway

  • Client: NYS Department of Transportation
  • Location: Brooklyn, NY

Project Overview

Our structural team has provided various engineering services for the ongoing reconstruction of the Gowanus Expressway Viaduct. The project involves reconstruction of this 6.1-mile stretch of elevated and subgrade roadway connecting the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to the Hugh L. Carey (Brooklyn-Battery) Tunnel.

We provided structural inspection and assistance in the design of emergency repairs. These repairs included replacing floor beams and stringers and the replacement or strengthening of deteriorated bolted, riveted and/or welded connections with new high-strength fasteners. Deck repair involved full- and partial-depth deck repairs, including deck profiling and saw cut grooving, as well as deck joint reconstruction and joint sealer replacements.

We also performed the overall survey, deck level, street level, and utility survey of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Shore Parkway, and Prospect Parkway connectors, as well as of the viaduct itself.
