The 110-year-old East River Tunnel (ERT) is a key part of the Northeast Corridor (NEC), the busiest passenger rail line in the U.S., connecting Boston and Washington, D.C. It consists of four single-track electrified rail tubes used by Amtrak, MTA Long Island Rail Road (MTA LIRR), and New Jersey Transit (NJT), providing a vital link between New York Penn Station and Sunnyside Yard in Queens. Years of heavy use, combined with damage from Superstorm Sandy, have led to significant deterioration, requiring extensive rehabilitation to maintain safety, reliability, and efficiency.
To address these needs, Amtrak is undertaking a major rehabilitation of the ERT, including structural repairs, electrical upgrades, and resilience improvements to withstand future storms. As the prime construction manager, the STV-Naik Joint Venture (JV) team is overseeing and coordinating the project, ensuring contractor performance, adherence to timelines, and compliance with safety and quality standards. This effort aims not only to restore the tunnel but also to enhance its durability and efficiency, improving service for millions of NEC passengers.
